Apparently sales of the AIDS drugs aren't enough to cover costs.
I read today about a drug called Stribild (which an AIDS patient takes once a day) made by Gilead in a cocktail of four separate drugs that is priced for the European market at $28,000 a year. The article in AIDSMed discussing the cost mentioned many were protesting.
So a fashion show hosted in San Francisco in October 2012, provided one answer. The $200,000 raised by the event is enough to provide 7 people medicine for a year. Click here to see a photo slide show of the evening gowns made by designers using 75,000 condoms.
I'm not sure which is the most ridiculous in afterthought. Perhaps they should have just bought condoms and shipped them to Africa or provided them at AARP meetings.
Still and all, awareness and money toward new medicines and treatment is better than nothing at all.
