Why would those seniors in our community be at risk for AIDS?
To build this site I started looking for references that would help people if they were fighting any number of diseases. One of the first articles I found was a Bulletin put out by the National Institute for Health warning those in the United States aged 50 or older that they are one of the AIDS target groups.
Why would those seniors in our community be at risk for AIDS? 1) Divorce after the kids have grow can lead many older people to the dating life and sexual experimentation, especially if there's no risk of having more children. 2) According to the bulletin, 1/4 of all people infected with HIV are aged 50 or older. 3) Many aged 50 or older are used to life before AIDS, don't think about asking questions about their partner's sexual history, don't consider using a condom, and don't know enough about AIDS. In my own case, my first sexual experience with my husband fell into this category. Afterwards, I thought, good grief, either of us could have given the other AIDS, since we didn't even discuss the issue. In my case, we found neither of us were in the at risk category. I'm relieved to be in a stable relationship. Still, you never know when you'll lose your partner. If you start dating, it pays to carry a condom, just in case.
